Argolida

The smallest finger of Peloponnese palm, Argolida, stands there for ages opposite from the rich marine gulf, combining the wildness of mountainous landscape with the sea peacefulness. The Argolic gulf is one of the most rich gulfs in life in the whole Greece. The residents in Argolida, occupied with agriculture, fishing and tourism as the extraordinary beaches in combination with the mild climate make this place an allurement destination for many tourists.
Everyone who interests not only for global but also gor Greek history, should visit Argolida as this prefecture encloses all the important tops in history. The Mycenae Kingdom, Argos, Epidavros, Tirinth, Asini and of course the graphic and picturesque Nafplio- the capital of prefecture- are cities of Argolida, nowadays, that wed the myth with the great archaeological discoveries.

Nafplio

The capital city of the prefecture of Argolida, a town that brings the marks of history in each corner.
It is only 150 k.m. faraway from Athens and connected directly through the Corinth Isthmus.
It is a short and enjoyable trip due to the new road network.
A unique place, which is blooming for ages, but always fascinates every visitor leaving in the end a magic sense of fertileness. Bronze and seafood colours at the same time, picturesque buildings and traditional neighbourhoods, tiny stone paths but also big modern roads – contrasts that compose a magic city.
The Franks and Venetian castles are those even today that make Nafplio a very beautiful city. In 1823 , Ioannis Kapodistrias is authorised as the first governor to the first capital in Greece – Nafplio till 1831 as he was murdered outside from the church Saint(Agios) Spyridon in Psaromahala place by a Greek. In 1833 the first King arrives to the port, “Othon” from Vavaria.
Nowadays, Nafplio is a modern city with a lot of shops, fascinating development and economic sector based mainly on tourism, as it is a link to archaeological centres as Mycenae, Argos and Tirinth, where Greek Civilisation is bloomed.

Sightseeing

Every part of Nafplio is full of sights with deep and long history from the greek nation.
Palamidi: Castle which is built in Venetian period and for safety reasons. You can reach up to the hill by the famous 999 steps from Arvanitia str. or by car the way for Karathona. Inside to the castle you can find anything left
(ruins) from those who stand by before and Kolokotroni’s prison. At the exit of Palamidi you can see a panoramic view of the city and the Argolic gulf which has different colours at every hour of the day.
Bourtzi: Castle which has been built on the small island Agios Theodoros. Venetians made this castle very closed to harbour linking it by chains with Five Brothers, that’s why the city was known as “Porto Cadena”. It was only for safety reasons. You can go to Bourtzi by rending a boat from the port.
Acronafplia or Its Kale: It is about the oldest and distanced place of the town, Arvanitia. It is said that named the hill of Arvanitia because Turks threw down from it thousand of Arvanites. Nowadays, you can relax walking along this place beginning from the small and shallow gulf Banieres. Little higher from there, it is a small fresh white church Panagitsa. Passing from the walls, under the arches of rocks and reaching in the slope of road, you have in your right hand the homonym beach where you can enjoy the sea and the sun. Going down the street you will see the handmade Venetian lion in the rock and in front of you there is the restored Gate of land, the last rampant of Akronafplia, where here sometimes reached the sea.
Syntagmatos square: The most central and historic square of Nafplio. An open nice place in the old town where someone can relax and enjoy drinking his coffee. In front of the building of National Bank, there is the statue of the fighter named Papalexopoulou, in Greek Revolution against the king Othon. On the right there is the Archaeological Museum. It is a venetian building which was used as a storage area and it ‘s worth it to visit for the treasures of Neolithiki period, Tirinth, Asini, and Mycenae. On the left there is the historic Trianon. Trianon existed Byzantine Temple, afterwards pane (Tzami), afterwards a learning place (allilodidaskaleio)- school, afterwards cinema and nowadays is used for cultural events by the Municipality.
Straight line from the Syntagma Square, on the road Staikopoulou, is found the Parliamentary, building of first Parliament of Greeks. Beginning from the Big Street, from the square of Town hall, in each step you meet also a historical building: The First High school, the first Drugstore, the first Gym, the residences of Bavarian of delegates of Othon and a lot of other that stigmatised the history of Nafplio and our country more generally. Going up on the street you will find the church of St. Spyridon and little below the Fragkoklisia-Catholic church. Going up little still you will find itself in the graphic neighborhoods of Nafplio, Psaromachala and little up there, from the highest part of the town, the Big Town Clock where you can enjoy the panoramic view or still going down to the square with five rods – the Five Brothers. Reaching in the harbour, you will right distinguish the imposingly building, the first Custom and advancing left, in the finish of harbour the Lighthouse of city.
It deserves also you wander in the graphic neighborhoods (Pronia) of Providence of henceforth first of refugees district of Newer Greece. In its

labyrinthian alleys, on a rock, exists scalped one still lion of Bavarian, this time sad, while the father of Othon, Loudovikos, dedicated him as sepulchral column in his a lot of compatriots that died from tyfo and been buried there. In the Avenue Amalia is found the Martial Museum, little below the Folklore Museum, a lot of modern shops and the rich library, ¨Palamidis¨. Above the beach, finds itself Virgin Mary (Temple of Birth of Virgin Mary) with the monument that testified according to the delivery, the boss of city, St. Anastasios.

Escape from the city of Nafplio:
Coming out from the city and with direction to Lygourio you meet the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, perhaps the most important piece of cultural heritage of Argolida. The ancient Theatre of Epidaurus is part of wider archaeological space of Asklipieiou.
Eight kilometres eastern from Nafplio, in the street to Tolo we meet Asini a prime village with modern life but also deep history. Can organise one day escape with ship that leaves from the harbour of Tolo with destination Hydra, Spetses and Poros.
Few kilometres afterwards Tolo and 10 afterwards Nafplio, we meet Drepano, a coastal village with his particular beach Plaka of Drepano, that is considered the ideal part for a heat summer day.
Afterwards Drepano we meet Vivari, a traditional sea side village with the eminent lagoon and few kilometres far away Kantia and then the beach St. Nikolas or Kondili (Chalk-line).
Of course, we could not be reported in one of the most historical parts of prefecture, Mycenae, that is found little outside from ArgosArgos is considered the ancienter city of all Greece and all Europe.
